Rapper 50 Cent criticized California for being the first state to provide health insurance to undocumented migrant adults. He questioned the decision, mentioning that even U.S. veterans don’t get health insurance.

“I don’t understand this, this [is] going to cost 2.6 billion dollars for tax payers,” “They don’t even give veterans health insurance. @arimelber call my phone now, help me understand this s**t.”

Prior to this change, undocumented migrants were not eligible for full health insurance benefits, although they were provided with pregnancy and emergency medical treatment.

Former California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) in 2015 to give health care coverage to illegal children from low-income families. Beginning in May 2016, SB 4 extended Medi-Cal coverage to around 170,000 illegal children under the age of 19.

A bill to provide illegal young adults between the ages of 19 and 25 with full-scope Medi-Cal health insurance was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) in 2019. The expansion was expanded to cover older undocumented persons (50 years of age and older) in 2022, offering them full health coverage.

The most recent expansion, which went into effect on January 1st, is projected to have cost $2.6 billion annually and has enabled some 700,000 undocumented adults to receive healthcare services.
